| Promoting flying disc sports in the Madison area and beyond.
From the President's Tee Pad Madison Area Disc Golf 2006 by Todd EbensGreetings fellow disc enthusiasts. Another fabulous season of disc golf is right around the corner. We have many things in store for this season as Spring is already here and the courses are only weeks away from being installed. The Hiestand renovation is slated to be completed sometime early this Summer. All pending the arrival of the materials needed to finish the few projects that are left. Most of the prep work is done, but a few T’s need to be crossed yet. As for the local courses here in town, Elver could be in as soon as mid-April if Mother Nature continues to co-operate. Token Creek looks like the end of April. Last but not least Hiestand is looking like mid-May. More work dates for Hiestand will be posted soon for the Spring, so keep any eye out for that in your e-mail as well as at the courses, and read the Hiestand article by Brad Wendt. We hope to utilize "Adopt-A-Hole" again to help with the litter control at the Elver and Hiestand courses. Marie and Ben Schwinn were instrumental in making this project a success last year. Hopefully we can have the same results if not better this season! Also coming up in less than two months will be the annual Capital Cup Match Play event at Elver Park. on May 20th and 21st. It will be a sanctioned singles event in the very fun format of match play. For more information on this event see the PDGA info where you can find contact info for the tournament director. I am very excited about the progress we are making and am looking forward to see how much better we can make this sport in our great city and abroad. Thanks to all of those who support the Madison Area Disc Club and its efforts. It can’t happen without team vision. So thanks for being a part of the team! Hope the new season brings everybody much positivity and prosperity, and we’ll se you on the links!!!!! Sincerely, Todd Ebens-MADC President

Rising Women’s Star In Madison Disc GolfFor those of you that are not familiar with Kim Keen, she is a relatively soft spoken and kind hearted gal. Although lately her golf game has been doing all the talking and is the talk of Wisconsin Women’s disc golf right now. Kim won The Memorial Supertour in Scottsdale Arizona back in early March in the Advanced Women’s division by a smooth 8 shots over a very competitive and solid field of 12 players. She continued her strong play at the Wisconsin Tour warm-up event two weeks later by securing her first pro win by 2 over a seasoned touring pro Barrett White and another up-and-coming MADC member Marie Schwinn. Although success is no stranger to Kim before this year as she has won several tourneys over the last few seasons. This season she seems prepared to challenge all takers with her swiftly rising level of play. You can typically find Kim playing with her "Partner-in-Crime" Eric Peterson at our weekly doubles here in Madison and most Wisconsin Tour events throughout the year. She will be happy to sign autographs for all! Great start to the season Kim! Keep representing Mad City and Wisconsin to the fullest! |
MADC website gets a face-liftPerhaps you have noticed the MADC Website tends to be outdated and has inconsistent flow. We have heard your concerns and recognized this ourselves. Therefore, we are moving forward with a complete rehaul of the website. Much like the efforts expended last year to bring the Hiestand course not only up to the city standards, but ours as well, we are preparing an improved MADC website to help support your disc sport needs. If you have suggestions of what you would like to see as part of the MADC website please send them to madcweb@madcitydisc.org and we will take them into consideration for further updates to the site. Also if you have Disc Sport news that you think should be posted on the site please send that information to the same email above. by Kipp Van Orsdel

HIESTAND RENOVATION During 2005 a good chunk of renovation work by many volunteers was completed including adding around sixty 6" x 6" x 16’ pieces of landscape timbers mostly at tee boxes to gain control of erosion. Some 80 yards of crushed limestone (roc) was trucked and dumped where needed by the City Parks Division. The "roc" was spread nicely into the timber frames looking rather nice and even better, functioning as a way to stabilize the grounds in the park. Some trees were removed both for safety and completion of this project. Large individual jobs were the path from hole 7 to tee 8 which was shored up as a very comfortable walking path. New steps at the #9 tee pad add both functioning control of erosion and a professional looking beauty to the park and tee area. The biggest individual job in the project is THE GREAT WALL OF HIESTAND. This wall was designed to stabilize the washing away of the hill and to hopefully add a stroke to your golf score (that was just a bonus result of the erosion control). As any one that played the course before being pulled in December noticed many tee areas are waiting for delivery of roc to fill in the timber framed spots. Watch the e-mail list for announcement when roc has been delivered and is ready for spreading. The big remaining jobs for this year are spreading roc on the walk from hole 2 to tee 3, walk between hole 5 and tees 6, and walk from hole 15 to tees 16. On each of those walks, wash timbers will be placed every 15 feet to help hold the roc in place and slow down the rivers of erosion during rains. The walk from hole 17 to am tee 18 will need to be stabilized also. Another big job is to install 4" x 4" tee sign posts at every tee pad on the course. This requires digging a hole at least 30 inches deep with a post hole shovel or power auger. Any one have access to a power auger? The tee signs will simply be laminated paper with hole #, distance for each pin placement and any other important information needed. This type of sign has been successfully used at courses in other cities that have vandalism problems. These signs are very easy to replace, inexpensive and easy to change if new pin placements are added. Plus their simplicity seems to not be interesting enough of a vandalism target. There is a page on the web site that keeps up relatively well with jobs needed to be completed listed per hole. You can also get in touch with Brad. A huge thank you to all of you who have given an hour, day, week or more of work helping this project reach fulfillment. A big thank you to the Parks Division (PD) for purchasing and delivering roc to the Hiestand Disc Golf Course. All the landscaping timber was donated to the course by the Parks Division. It was given to the PD for a project but was never used. We saw the pile of timbers when picking up the baskets at Franklin storage site for installation at Hiestand and asked what the timbers were being used for. They had been abandon so they were given to us. We put them to good use. Hopefully Hiestand Disc Golf Course renovation will be finished by early summer. Then we can start similar work at the Elver Park Disc Golf Course.
