Hello everyone-

Most of the details have been worked out.  Here's what we've got...

Anyone is welcome.

Handicapped league.  One division.  The new Disc Golf United handicapping service will be used.  There is normally an annual fee per player for this service.  However, anyone who participates in league play will have access to Disc Golf United from May through October at no cost.  Players will be able to view league standings online as early as each Tuesday evening.

$3 per week.  Players will register at the Glide Disc Golf Pro Shop located across the street from hole #1.

$1 from each entry fee will be donated to the Madison Area Disc Club.

There will be 100% payout in pro shop gift cards.

As an example, 20 players, $60 in entry fees are received, $20 is donated to the club and $60 is paid out in pro shop gift cards.

There will be three separate 8 week sessions - Spring (May/June), Summer (July/August) and Fall (September/October).  Points will be used to determine the final standings from each session. Players' best 7 out of 8 weeks will be used.  Trophies will be awarded to the top players from each session.

A flexible starting time will be used.  Players may register and tee off as early as 4:00 and as late as 7:00 provided there is a group of at least three players.  These hours may change due to the time the sun is setting and what tees players will be playing from.

During each 8 week session players will...

Play from the short tees twice.
Play from the long tees twice.
Play odd numbered holes from the short tees and even numbered holes from the long tees twice.
Play odd numbered holes from the long tees and even numbered holes from the short tees twice.

The first week of the Spring session will be May 6th.

The Tuesdays following the Spring and Summer sessions will be off weeks.  These dates are 7/1 (week of July 4th) and 9/2 (day after Labor Day).  Each session is 8 consecutive weeks.

I believe this league structure is very unique and has a lot to offer players.  I hope to see many of you there.  Please spread the word.  Especially to those who may not visit this forum.

Contact me at 608.285.5190 or mike@glidediscgolf.com or post questions and/or comments here.

Thanks,

Mike

Sounds like fun.  For anyone who wants to play early I'll post a shout out if I go.  Most of the time I will need to tee off by 4:30.

Unfortunately human nature being what it is,
that is why the element of randomness was maintained
by waiting till there was good number of players say 12 to 16,
then pulling cards for the grouping.

Guess we'll have to see how it goes.

I hope the alternating tee pads won't be too confusing.
Mike will you somehow indicate on the scorecard long tee vs. short tee?

Or, maybe go out and put the CTP type flags on the tee pads that are supposed
to be used for the Tuesday Night League. That would be a more evident reminder.

I would sincerely hope that no one cheats while playing but there always are a few bad seeds I guess.  I plan on playing with people I know if they are there to tee off with.  I'm not going to be able to stand around and wait for other people to show up.  I think indicating on the score cards what tees are being played for the day is a good idea but not necessary.  Maybe just a flier for each week in the shop explaining the format.  Before they leave the shop I'm sure Mike will tell them what the format is too.  If they can't remember from the shop to the 1st tee then they have bigger problems to worry about.

Yeah... you'd hope that no one cheats, but I've played several league rounds where there's been quite a bit of funny business. Maybe we could still have some element of the random grouping, especially for the groups going out between 4-5:30, which is when most will probably show up. I don't know, worth thinking about.

I'm really stoked the the handicap is going to be based on rounds at Hesitand only though, I think that will make a big difference this year.

Oh, and thanks Mike for setting all of this up, I look forward to playing in this league. THREAD DRIFT WARNING - any word on when your shop's opening?

Hey guys.  Great points.

To ensure players throw from the correct tee pads, I'll be speaking with everyone when they register and marking the scorecards for the weeks when half of the holes are played from the short tees and the other half from the long ones.  Any players who discover they throw from an incorrect tee pad will take a 7 on the hole.

The opportunity for someone to cheat can't be eliminated completely.  A person who is set on winning at any cost will find ways to cheat even if he or she is playing with three honest and watchful strangers.  It's not perfect, but reality.  With that said, I will try to avoid sending a foursome of rec players out together.  This has nothing to do with cheating, but with inadvertant rules violations such as a bad stance, falling putts and moving branches.  Having at least one knowledgible player in each group will provide recreational players with an opportunity to learn and keep the playing field as level as reasonably possible.

Pat - I like your idea of adding some element of random groupings.  I'll give it some more thought.

This overall format may be a huge success.  It may be a terrible failure.  My guess is that it'll be somewhere in between.  The key will be indentifying areas of improvement and making changes.  The league may change from the Spring to the Summer to the Falls sessions.  Like a course, club or tournament, a league is a constant work in progress.

Thanks,

Mike

P.S. Pat - the shop is nearly ready!  The plan is to open on Monday, but I've still got a lot to do between now and then.  I'll post an announcement when all systems are go.

What do people think about a shotgun/rolling start hybrid?

4:00 - shotgun start - random groupings

5:00 - shotgun start - random groupings

6:00 - shotgun start - random groupings

Thanks,

Mike

I was fond of how organized random groups  last year. Plus it was fun when a gallery formed  at hole 18 for the last couple groups. But, I tend to be a stickler for change.  Tongue

That's a great idea.  That way people that want to wait can and those that need to get out on the course sooner also have that option.  You are one smart guy Mike.

If by "shotgun" start, you mean groups starting at different holes than Hole #1,
then I would be careful. That is where we ran into the most static with the other players,
on the course, not participating in the league.

We found it best for all groups to start on Hole #1.

One other question:
Will you(Mike) be the one creating the accounts in the Disc Golf U for the handicapping?

I look forward to playing in the league.

Thanks again for the feedback.  I really appreciate it.

shotgun starts - recreational players have just as much right to the course as league players do and I'll be reminding league players of this often.   The alternative is having a half dozen or more groups of league players mixed in with rec players waiting to tee off on hole 1.  If there are just two separate foursomes teeing off at 4:00 and they both want to start from hole 1 - no problem.  There are no hard and fast rules.  Pay and play.  Start from hole 1, 14, whatever.  It's all good as long as players play all 18 holes from the correct tee pads!

Disc Golf United - yes, I'll be creating each player's account.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike I would not encourage players to start on a hole other than Hole #1.
If the non-league players complain to the Parks Department,
about people jumping in front of them, they may cause enough backlash
to cancel the league.

Also, you might want to make it clear about the use of a mini disc
for non-tournament players. This was another point that was emphasized last year.
Alternatively, they could flip their disc.

And, of course, as TD, it is your discretion whether or not the 2 meter rule applies.  Shocked

If you read the Tuesday Night League thread from last year,
you'll see how and when most of these topics came about.

I know, the key point is to: HAVE FUN!

And, generally, adding a bunch of rules, tends to drive out the fun.

Oh yeah, I forgot for a second about the non league complaints.  Probably best not to do  the shotgun start.  I can definitely understand their frustration.

Starting every group at hole #1 shouldn't be an issue.  Again, let's see what works and make adjustments as we go.

Thanks,

How is the handicapping going to be calculated for leagues? Strickly PDGA rating, or by the rounds shot on the course during league play?
